Introduction

If you could ask God for only one thing today, would it be an answer or would it be wisdom?

Before reading Proverbs, I often found myself praying for God to answer specific questions or reveal the next step. While those prayers were important, Proverbs gently shifted my perspective. Instead of simply asking God for answers, I began asking Him to make me wise.

As I journeyed through this book, I discovered that wisdom is far greater than the answers we often chase. An answer may solve a temporary problem, but godly wisdom transforms the way we think, the decisions we make, the relationships we build, and the life we live. Wisdom doesn’t simply prepare us for today’s questions. It equips us for tomorrow’s challenges.

Throughout this journey, the Lord reminded me that true wisdom is not measured by intelligence, education, or life experience. It begins with reverence for God, grows through obedience to His Word, and is demonstrated by the way we live each day.

When I first filled page after page of my journal, I didn’t realize what God was doing. Looking back now, I can see that Proverbs wasn’t simply giving me verses to underline. It was quietly transforming my heart.

As I prayed through Proverbs chapter by chapter, these are the lessons the Holy Spirit impressed upon me.

The Book That Quietly Changed My Heart

There are books of the Bible that comfort us.

There are books that encourage us.

There are books that strengthen our faith.

For me, Proverbs became the book that quietly changed me from the inside out.

As I flipped through months of journal entries, one truth became impossible to ignore.

That may be one of the greatest gifts wisdom can give us.

Proverbs Taught Me That Wisdom Is Worth Pursuing

Before reading Proverbs, I often prayed for answers.

After reading Proverbs, I found myself praying for wisdom.

Because wisdom changes the way we handle every answer that comes.

Proverbs taught me that wisdom isn’t reserved for scholars, pastors, or people with years of biblical knowledge. It is available to anyone willing to seek God with humility.

My prayers changed from,

“Lord, what should I do?”

to,

“Lord, make me wise.”

That simple shift changed everything.

Proverbs Revealed My Pride

One prayer appeared repeatedly throughout my journal.

“Lord, please correct me if I am wrong.”

That isn’t an easy prayer to pray.

Proverbs continually reminds us that the wise welcome correction while the foolish reject it.

I realized I didn’t simply want God to bless my plans.

I wanted Him to interrupt them if they weren’t His.

Proverbs Convicted Me About My Words

Again and again, Proverbs brought me back to my speech.

How I responded.

How I listened.

Whether I spoke too quickly.

Whether my words produced life or destruction.

I learned that wisdom is often heard before it is seen.

A wise heart produces wise words.

Proverbs Changed How I Viewed Success

As I looked back through my journal, I noticed something unexpected.

I wasn’t praying for popularity.

I wasn’t praying for recognition.

I wasn’t praying for followers.

Instead, I kept asking God for discernment, humility, obedience, understanding, and wisdom.

Without realizing it, Proverbs quietly redefined success for me.

Success became faithfulness.

Success became obedience.

Proverbs Made Me Desire Correction More Than Compliments

Compliments feel good.

Correction helps us grow.

That doesn’t mean correction is enjoyable.

It means it is valuable.

Every loving correction from God became another opportunity to become more like Christ.

Proverbs Taught Me That Discernment Protects Us

Many of my journal entries centered on avoiding unhealthy influences, guarding my heart, and recognizing deception.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand why those prayers became so frequent.

Now I do.

The more responsibility God entrusts to us, the more discernment we need.

Not everyone belongs in every season.

Not every opportunity is from God.

Not every voice deserves influence.

Proverbs taught me to ask God not only to open doors but also to give me the wisdom to recognize which doors should remain closed.

As you read Proverbs, what has God been teaching you?

Proverbs Changed My Prayers

Before Proverbs, many of my prayers focused on changing my circumstances.

After Proverbs, my prayers focused on changing my character.

Teach me.

Correct me.

Give me understanding.

Keep me humble.

Help me listen.

Help me obey.

Guard my heart.

Make me wise.

Looking back, I believe those became some of the most important prayers I have ever prayed.

Proverbs Taught Me That Wisdom Is a Daily Decision

One of my favorite realizations from revisiting my journals is that growth rarely happens all at once.

It happens one chapter at a time.

One prayer at a time.

One act of obedience at a time.

Wisdom wasn’t something I suddenly possessed.

It became something I chose to practice every day.

Looking Back

When I first began journaling through Proverbs, I couldn’t see everything God was preparing me for.

I didn’t know He was preparing me to write books.

To begin a ministry.

To encourage women.

To build a business rooted in biblical truth.

I simply showed up each day with an open Bible, an open heart, and a willingness to learn.

Looking back now, I can say with confidence that Proverbs didn’t just teach me how to make wise decisions.

It taught me how to become the kind of woman who seeks God’s before making them.

That may be the greatest lesson Proverbs has given me.

Because wisdom isn’t about knowing more.

It’s about becoming more like Christ.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5–6

Before I closed my journal after finishing Proverbs, this became my prayer.
